New York City Foodies

Peter and I took off for a weekend trip to New York City. Some newlywed friends of ours, John & Michelle Barrow, were so nice to babysit the kids and pets for us. We stayed at the Residence Inn at Times Square which was right in the center of everything. We flew in Friday morning and then explored the city on foot. We found the Carneige Deli where Peter and I shared a HUGE open faced rebuen sandwich. Between the two of us, we couldn’t even get through it all, it was that big! We walked to central park, which was much bigger and more beautiful than I imagined. Who knew such a huge, beautiful park could be nestled in this busy metropolis. We walked down 5th Avenue and did some shopping. We stopped in some of the fancy’s including the big 3 floor Tiffany’s store (just looking, we said) We met up with Lisa & Rob Sorenson, who are friends of ours from Atlanta, for an italian dinner at Carmikles. Then off to the theater district to see “Wicked” on Broadway. The show was fantastic, I loved every minute of it.
We knew that being in New York City meant that you cannot leave without experiencing these 5 things:
1. New York style pizza
2. New York cheese cake
3. New York Deli sandwich
4. New York Subway ( not the sandwich chain, but the train)
5. Broadway shows

We found a great little diner where I marked #2 off the list and Peter had a mile high piece of lemon merangine pie. The next day we navigated our way through the subway lines and got a little turned around, but finally made it to Liberty State Park to see the statue of liberty. We walked across the Brooklyn bridge, which gave us a great view of both the New York City and Brooklyn skyline. It was Hot and very humid and it was lunch time, so we walked to the famous Grimaldisd Pizza where we found a line all the way down the block with a one hour wait time, patience is not something that comes easy for Peter, but after waiting outside in the hot sun and then sitting elbow to elbow in a tiny Brooklyn restaurant we had a delicious pizza and marked off #1 on the to do list. Our feet were very tired as we walked back over the bridge and to the hotel. We met up with Rob and Lisa for dinner at an Indian place and then went to see The Lion King on Broadway.
I forgot to mention that our hotel overlooked the Empire State building which was really cool to see. We also saw the ABC & NBC live studios, from the outside.
Rob and Lisa gave us passes to attend the International Fancy Food Show which was neat and we sampled food from chocolate, cheese, honey, taffy, wasabi peanuts , greek yogurt and everything inbetween. I never leave home without my tums!
We returned home with happy kids and a clean house. Life is good…
